Hi,
I want to understand effect of washer thickness on bearing stress generated on clamping plate. What if I reduces washer thickness to half then will it increase the bearing force on plate ?? To accommodate this reduced washer thickness should bearing area needs to be increased ? Is there any calculation to justify washer thickness ? Which areas should be considered when you're reducing washer thickness ? Please note that this is for non-standard square washer.

The thinner washer will not change the bearing force, but it will change the bearing pressure and/or bearing stress. Why? Draw a free body diagram (FBD) through the bolt, plates and washer and describe to us how the system works, and how you would go about analyzing the forces, moments and stresses in the washer, plates and bolt. How will reducing the washer pl. thickness increase the effective bearing area?
