Is it possible to insert a non-text symbol (specifically the surface finish symbol in this case) into mtext, so that it repositions with the text, and I dont have to estimate the size of the gap to leave in the middle of the text? I seem to remember seeing some mention of this somewhere, but can't find any reference to it now that I need it.
Tia for any advice.

You can use the symbols in the "symbols" pull down on the MTEXT window. I do not recall exactly where the Finishing symbol is, but there are other symbols in each font, merely "copy" and paste them into your mtext line and the symbol will behave as if it were any other ASCII text character. By the way, the %%c, %%p, etc DOES NOT work with mtext, you must use the symbols in the window only. Enjoy.

All versions of AutoCAD since R14 have included all of those symbols in the GDT font, obviating the need to convert your old SHP file. (And most of the SHP files you are looking for are no longer provided on the MDT CD.) So all you need to do is create a new text style and specify the font as GDT. Then you can use %%118 to insert the counterbore symbol, %%119 to insert the countersink symbol and %%120 to insert the depth symbol (all according to the ANSI standard).

When using MText change change the font to the GDT font or any other font for that special symbol.
