If I need to attract a neodymium magnet stronger and have the flux travel farther than I can get with mild steel can I use a piece of nonmagnetized neodymium? Will the nonmagnetized material become permanently magnetic if exposed to a strong field?

I'm not clear on what you're trying to do, but a piece of nonmagnetized Neo will definitely not help flux travel farther out. Also, the Neo will become magnetized (and retain that magnetism) when exposed to a large field.

What are you trying to do?

The link doesn't take us anywhere (unless I did something wrong).

If you're looking for a high permeability material like steel/iron, Neodymium is NOT it. It has very low permeaiblity. And as mentioned can retain high residual magnetism.

You have only two choices. Either make the attractant a magnet as well, or use a more powerful magnet.

I am using neo magnets in welding fixtures and stronger is better. It would be nice to be able to easily knock off the schmutz when the magnets are removed for cleaning

Would wrapping the magnets in a plastic bag (or other, similarly thin material) work? The holding power wouldn't decrease much and you can just fold it inside out, trapping the schmutz in the bag.

Just an idea.

Thanks MagMike. The plastic bag or aluminum foil in a welding environ are only briefly helpful. Would the amorphous metals be better than steel?

Amorphous metals will not provide more holding force than steel.
