Hello Everybody

Could anyone tell me please if it allowed in piping arrangement for natural gas to use some diameter for a portion of piping arrangement then use a smaller diameter for a small pipe segment or valve then back again to the diameter that I started with.
for example I have an existing piping arrangement with diameter NPS16 and at its end there is an NPS10 valve, is that allowed to connect to this NPS10 valve a new piping arrangement with NPS16, note that, I assume that my constraints are passed anyway even under NPS10, my question not about if NPS10 can handle my flow or not, my question about if there is a problem with this nonuniform arrangement, NPS16 then NPS10 then NPS16 again

thank you in advance

The short answer to your question is that, provided the engineer has done their job, No - it is not "taboo" to reduce line size to accommodate a valve or some other component in the line.

The engineer responsible for the design of the piping must evaluate this reduction in size to confirm it's acceptability, evaluating such aspects as pressure drop, velocity, flow recovery downstream, etc. You shoud not make the mistake of "assuming your constraints" are acceptable - confirm your design before issuing it.

piping arrangements, no issue.

There is a size change so your stress levels may change or become concentrated t this point, but in general if you can get the flow without an issue then it might look a little strange, but is Ok.

Pipeline arrangement , yes as you won't be able to pig the line with such an arrangement.

Remember - More details = better answers
Also: If you get a response it's polite to respond to it.

For the piping design, it's better to design a line with the uniform size without any bottleneck, such as the small block valve or the reduced pipe section.

On the other hand, there are many practical cases to mix the piping sections with the different sizes. It may be because the space constraint for construction or material availability issue. Or, the project may need to utilize the pipe of the different line size but already existed in place. And, it can be acceptable as the piping system meets the design requirements.
