Hello everyone,

Quick question regarding framing for large steel buildings.

Do you typically use hot rolled steel for everything including floor joists? What are typical spacings? 4'-0" on center?

Or do you use hot rolled steel for just the big stuff (i.e. columns and beams) and then frame between with some other material (i.e. cold formed steel or wood)?

I'm more talking about the biggest buildings like skyscrapers and the like. I envision them being constructed as a giant concrete cantilever column with hot rolled steel girders framing out from it and then smaller hot rolled steel joists framing between the girders supporting metal decking below a concrete slab which serves as the floor. Does that sound correct? or wrong?

Thanks in advance :)

Concrete over metal deck floors. Shear studs on the beams into the deck for composite action. This, instead of light framed infill. Spans are on the order of 10 ft. between beams for unshored composite slab systems.

Sound like some Google searches are required. This will change from country to country.

Cold formed portal frames are common in my area but not in others.
