I was given a task to measure waterlines of a mold tool and instead of using NPT, use the metric equivalent. Am I safe to assume that NPT refers to the fitting and that the size of the line is actually NPS which means the metric equivalent would be DN?

Eg.

0.4375in is 1/4 NPT
but really 1/4 NPS
Therefore 1/4 NPS= 8 DN

Also is it more correct to put the DN in front or behind?

The metric pipe thread standard derives from BSPT.
Your Swagelok dealer stocks adapters both ways, and can provide some info on the threads and the pipe diameters.
