I am using a surface mount 100k 0805 NTC thermistor which the data sheet says its max operating current is 0.14 mA . Is this max before the self heating becomes a problem ? This does seem a rather low figure , so some reason I have not come across this before .

Is there some reason you want to dissipate more than 2mW in your temperature sensing device? Not only will it self-heat, but it will also contaminate your test.
