A 4 storey building with 20,000 sq.meter as a floor area for each storey is divided into 5 zones to comply with system protection area limitation as per NFPA 13 section 8.2. Now if five risers are provided to serve the building with sprinkler system, how many fire pumps are required. A single fire pump set (Duty, standby and jockey) will serve all the five risers or a separate pump have to be provided for each riser? NFPA 13 speaks about providing a riser for covering a floor area not more than 4831 sq.meter. Does the term 'riser' means seperate system with separate fire pump? Please clarify.

A building can have multiple sprinkler zones supplied by a single fire pump set.

I would assume you need standpipe valves per NFPA 14, but verify that.

Determine the flow and pressure requirements, whether it is for standpipe or the most remote sprinkler zone on the top floor and size the single pump for that.

Pedarrin2, Thanks for the response. Do I have to provide separate Alarm check valve for each riser?

Each required sprinkler zone would have to have means to detect flow for notification of where the actuated sprinkler is located.

This could be a flow switch.

Since you have a fire pump, when it starts up, there should be contacts within the panel which would provide alarm functionality.
