Hello,
I have Toshiba Satellite 5105 laptop, 512mb RAM, 1.7GHZ mobile Pentium4 and nVidia GeForce4 440 Go graphics card.
Pro/E 2001 runs well, system shades, redraws and spins models fast.
The only problem is that when I open more than one window with a part in it - it seems like the graphics card bogs down, system does not respond for approx 10-15 seconds and a strange clipping of the part appears on screen.
I heard that it is a simple patch fix provided by RivaTuner
but I do not know how to put it to use.
If anyone has encountered the same problem or knows where to point me to I would appreciate it very much.
Regards,
George

You need more than rivatuner. Read the whole webpage where you got it. It is hack so we aren't going to discuss it here.

The problem you encountered is the difference between a geforce and a quadro video card. It is also a function of the amount of video ram you have. If your laptop lets you increase the amount of video ram see if that helps (look in the BIOS).

thank you for your response.
i never realized it was a hack,
i think i will just upgrade to the quadro video card then.

Can't be done with a laptop. Dell and IBM sell laptops with Quadro cards. Dell aslo has one wiht the geforece 4200go with 64mb ram. It is a good compromise for cost and performance.

I have just purchased a Dell Inspiron 8500 with the Geforce 4200 and everything spins and looks great untill I open more than three pro/E windows. Every window after the third seems to have no hardware accelerated graphics at all. Very slow and jumpy. I have installed the latest driver and tried many different settings in the video settings but nothing works. Are there any other tricks that might help? THANKS!

Actually you can put the new Quadro4 700GoGL card in the Inspiron 8200 it will fit in the video card connection and size. It is done by quite a few people check the Dell community Forumn. Also sorry to tell you Nathan the Inspiron 8500 cannot use the card mentioned above. They changed some things in that model. I also can tell you how to do a simple change in the registry that will allow you to have access to nvidias own overclocking tools built into the card and software.

This is Nathan again. Thanks for the help. I have learned a lot more than I ever wanted to know about graphics acceleration in the last few days. I think I can say that the problem is related to memory consumption on the card. The reason I say this is that the only thing that I have found to help is changing from 32 bit color to 16 bit which makes the number of windows that I can run with hardware acceleration from 3 to 4. From reading some Nvidia literature I think that the most obvious culprit is that I can't enable "Use unified back/depth buffer" (it doesn't even appear in my driver settings like it does in the Quadro driver) Do you know how to enable this on a Geforce card? The other possible culprit is the number of clip regions, but I don’t guess that I can enable those without one of those “soft quadro” hacks which fool the driver into thinking you paid for the Quadro card instead of the Geforce card. That seems a little scary to try on a laptop.
