NX 4 Image insert in Drafting.

Hello.

I'm running into this one issue. I need to insert some reference information on my technical drawings in an image format. I know how the process of inserting an image onto a drawing sheet works but it seems that when adding a large image NX4 can not handle it. NX runs out of memory yet the image size is relatively small. My CAD station has 2 GB of memory.

The image size is based on a 1 to 1 drawing scan of an E size drawing to a .tif format. The resulting .tif file size is 8800 X 6800 pixels the file its self is only 130 KB.

I've tried converting this .tif to the only two other formats that NX handles, i.e .jpg or .png with the same issue.

Is this just a limitation of NX 4?

It would be nice if NX had better image manipulation capabilities as the way it is right now seems to be way too limited for a software of this caliber. Rater to Vector converters would be ultimate. Anyway any insight would be much appreciated.

I suspect that there's something else wrong. Have you tried this with another image from a different source. Perhaps at a minimum try opening the TIF in paint or similar and saving it under a different name as an attempt to somehow affect the formatting of the file. I couldn't relate any specifics to support this but as it would only take a minute it may be worth trying a few things along the lines of confirming that there isn't something about that image that afflicts you.

Do some testing with the minimum of other likely problems as well. Nothing else open but a new file with an empty drawing and trying to add images from different sources.

The other tack might be to query whether your graphics card is up to the job or not. Perhaps it isn't as capable a piece of hardware as you need.

You're welcome to post or e-mail the image and I could attempt to add it to a drawing to test it for you but beyond that I don't know what would be causing it.

It couldn't hurt to ensure you've the latest release of NX-4 as well I suppose in case there was something amiss in some earlier releases, but if that existed I haven't heard of it.

On the subject of raster to vector I've never seen any tool that created anything worth using with CAD systems. If you just want to trace over the top of the image in following this method then from experience tracing remains the more effective technique.

The problem when you convert raster images to vector data is that the output lines are so numerous and random that you still need to reconstruct the curves anyway in ways that are usually not much easier for having the vector data and sometimes even harder.

I also suspect the 'quality' of the file, if for no other reason than I find it hard to believe that a 8800 X 6800 pixel .tif file would ONLY be 130KB in size. I've worked with image files for years, and those numbers just don't feel right.

Now that you mention it seems a lot like 130Kb would probably tend to 130Mb. I'm wondering if there's a maximum sized image that NX can handle?
