Does anybody know what the letters NX actually stand for?

In searching the Internet this forum included I have found no definitive answer. Possible theories include that it may have been named for any one of the possibilities listed below.

* NX class starship, a class of Starfleet vessels in Star Trek: Enterprise. NX = Naval Experiment.
* NX bit, for marking parts of computer memory as "no execute" (kind of negative don't you think)
* NX, the IATA code for Air Macau.
* NX technology, developed by NoMachine that makes remote X11 connections over small bandwidth/high latency
links fast enough to work with remote desktops. (Really! That fast?}
* net exports, in economics. ((no comment)
* Nissan Pulsar NX and Nissan NX, a range of subcompact coupes offered by Nissan from the 1980s to 1993.
(You named it after a car?)
* National Express routes; for example NX025 London-Brighton route via Gatwick Airport. (British?)
* 'Entrance-Exit' route setting, in Railway signalling.
* NX Files, an action adventure martial arts web-show. (Ninja something or other no doubt?)
* NX Cash, or Nexon Cash, is a currency used in the online MMORPG MapleStory to purchase items in the cash shop.
(Hey can I pay may maintenance with these?)
* (Originally DRS/NX), a port of UNIX System V (releases 2 to 4.2) for ICL DRS and later servers.

I'm keen to guess![bigsmile]

Best Regards

I always thought it was NeXt as in the next CAD system after unigraphics. I read this somewhere a while back. Somthing about the developers started calling it that and the name kind of stuck.

I like to think it stands for NXperienced myself (cause that's what I feel like using it coming from I-Deas) :)

The 'story' around the company is that during a meeting one of our senior executives suggested that we have a contest to pick a new name for the new combined NX/Ideas product and while he was explaining what it was he was looking for he mentioned that perhaps something around the idea of this being the "Next Generation" or the "Next System" or the "Next . . . somthing", someone popped-up and said why not just "NEXT"! Since "NEXT" is an actual word, albeit with the right sense of the desired meaning, it was decided that in typical software industry fashion, we keep the 'sound' so that everyone knows what we meant but change the 'spelling' to something never seen before and thus was born 'NX'.

So I guess MCGNX got the story pretty close, or at least the one that we seem to be willing to admit to.
