This is an issue that needs to be filed with GTAC.
I cannot do it at the moment because I'm having account issues.

Current NX11 (local not TCE) behavior is multiple Save As dialogs popup when you only want to save a single child component.

There are no UI queues to explain what is happening. The title bar in Save As diaglog doesn't indicate you are now saving the Parent.
There is no Save Scope to choose from. The Options button is greyed out.

It's very confusing to the user and it's not clear what is happening.

Only when you hit cancel on the 2nd Save As dialog, does NX prompt you that the parent assembly won't be saved with a new name. Are you sure you want to do this? Yes/No?

This workflow needs to be addressed and reflects poorly on modern NX that such an old and fundamental process isn't straight forward.

There should also be an option to Save As but not replace the component in session with the newly Saved As file. CATIAV5 calls this function Save a Copy.

To make things easy for you, if you want to do a save-as for one component, then only have that single component open, and not the upper level assembly that it is part of.

Take a look at "Make unique", this may help.

If you have Enhancement request you should really report them yourself. It is too much work and information needed to let someone else handle it.

OK. I will do this. My GTAC account is fixed.

Do I goto
then click Create or Update Incident Report ?
This seems to be creating an IR...

General forum question
Is there an easy way to respond to someone's post and quote them automatically? Currently, I'm copying/pasting their text, adding quote tags and typing their name.
Is that what you did when you made your reply to me?

Most forums have a reply button for each post that will automatically add quote the parent.
I'm wondering if this site has a similar feature.

This is not only the way it should work in NX, but this is the way it works in other CAD systems.
There is no need to create an IR

Yes, you can get to the same webpage through the NX help menu. When you contact GTAC an Incident Report (IR) is started. GTAC will follow up and classify the IR accordingly; e.g. a Problem Report (PR) if you found a bug, and Enhancement Request (ER) if you want new or different functionality, etc. I'm guessing that your specific request will fall into the ER bin.

Nope, keep doing what you are doing. Hopefully they will update the interface in the near future.

Disagree.
I get it that "this is how NX functions" and I'm OK with that but there are no visual cues for what is happening.
NX does not let the user know which Assembly is being saved.
What if my child part is nested 4 assemblies deep?

Will I see the same Save As dialog 4 times? There are no clues to show the user what is happening. How do I know which assembly Save As dialog is referring to?

There are definitely opportunities to improve this workflow.

There are two replies above that help you to copy this file.
File an IR if you want, but to change something that goes back decades will be hard to do.

Actually there is a visual cue, but it is very easy to miss and may even be covered up by the save-as dialog itself! In the NX "cue" line, default location below the graphics window, you will see a prompt such as "enter new file name for 12345.prt".

I think the whole process could be made easier; at the very least, the prompts should be more obvious. Someone on the Siemens forum posted some code that appears to provide a GUI for the save process (I have not tried the code, so I can't comment on exactly what it does).
