I have a Dell dual proc (390) runnung NX3 version = 3.0.4.2 on corporate server and I've been getting various "memory access" errors randomly, at least once a day. I haven't been able to narrow a pattern. this one is more frequent...

Internal Error: an attempt was made to access an attribute not in the relevant class while updating object of type in PARTNAV module.

I am one of many users and the only one who seems to be getting this. any help with this would be much appreciated.

Patrick,

I'm not entirely sure myself, but we have had the same thing and seen similar errors. We don't necessarily see it very often certainly not on a daily basis. IN my experience it wasn't a crash message just an error. If that is also the case for you then the most revealing piece of information may be what do you do to make it go away?

Some I have been speaking with from the IT department swear that Dell boxes with the Google Toolbar installed are evil, perhaps it is relevant to you. When this was the case they would re-install Windows XP. I must say that in general this kind of account doesn't endear itself to me. If the Google toolbar overwrites a few files then better to find the files and patch them back with the originals. Perhaps just uninstalling the Toolbar and running Windows repairs and loading the latest updates would suffice.

The error sounds like NX is having difficulty reading the file or a corrupt feature. Maybe your network is contributing to this or something to do with reading and writing the data not only from RAM could be in play. You could test with the files stored locally. Perhaps try turning off partial loading, for a while and see if things improve. Take care with using a lot of linked geometry if it can be avoided, as if you're drawing from a file that is being modified you could also get burned, if possible turn off automatic updating behavior in favor of something you're able to exercise more control over. Have you been working with Solid Edge files, opening them in NX is another source in internal errors that I'm aware of.

let us know if any of the above improve things for you!

The dell i'm working with is pretty clean, no google toolbar. IT "cleans" the box before sending it out to us.

Partial loading, it's off.

Could it be a box issue with RAM???

Just now this morning I received another again. this time when I hit save. this is what I got...

The following parts failed to save causing the overall save operation to fail:

While saving C:\Work\314458\tn5757_e01w.prt:
C:\Work\314458\tn5757_e01w.prt - Internal error: memory access violation

Patrick,

Let me guess that if you're in an assembly if you try closing just the part that has the error that you still won't be able to save. Try making that part the displayed part and you probably can't.

Does it happen to other boxes or just yours? Are you running XP-Pro, or something else? Does the box under properties report all the memory it was advertised with?

It does sound like your box is coming up against a hard memory limit. It could be that some of the memory has failed, but that probably isn't the case given that we've seen what sounds like the same thing. I've listed a couple of things that will help free up some memory.

Go into the task manager and look at what's using lots of memory if there are processes or other applications that you can afford to be without using lots of memory then stop running them.

Go into system properties Advanced tab, under performance options using the visual effects tabs set it to Adjust for best performance. I don't do this, and it is probably only a 1% improvement, but every bit could help.

In the same area system properties Advanced, use the performance tab, then advanced tab and then change the virtual memory to make the custom size equal the maximum size. If you needed to increase it then you may get some benefit. Also make sure when doing this that you have enough free space on you C drive.

For XP-Pro with 4Mb of memory try turning on the 3Gb switch in your config.sys, we've posted how previously but you'll get instructions quickly via google.

You may not see dramatic results, so save often, and be prepared to reboot at least daily is advisable.

Best Regards

still getting memory access errors while in Manufacturing, mostly after using Verify. I tried something new this time after getting the error. after "OK-ing" the error i tried to do a Save Work Part Only and received a new one... anyone seen this one?

getting reformatted next monday but would like to nail this problem and maybe eliminate the need to reformat. thanks for any feedback.

I would request that the IT department check the RAM. My department has seen a few bad modules that led to random errors.

thanks for all the suggestions.
I had IT look into the Virt Mem paging file size as suggested by Hudson888. The settings were low and have now been adjusted. No errors returned yet.

Thanks again.
