In NX5 I was able to change something so that when I moved from a component back to the top assembly, the assembly (not component) would be the work part.

I cannot figure out where this option was or how to set it in NX6. I looked under customer defaults, assemblies, general, work part, "Maintain work part" is not checked (in nx5 or nx6), so it must be something else.

Make sure that someone has not changed this setting under...

Preferences -> Assemblies...

The 'Maintain' option near the top of the dialog should be toggled OFF.

This happens to be one of those settings which despite what Customer Defaults may indicate, changing this under Preferences during a session will be recorded in the Windows registry. The reason for this is that this setting can have an impact on performance, particularly if you were using a system with a graphics card with limited capabilities, the idea being that the user should have a way of overriding the Customer Default setting on a per-station basis, for which the local registry is an ideal tool for something like that and since we record these settings in the registry on a per-version basis, it easy to see how you could have this working one way in NX 5 and differently when running NX 6.

BTW, anyone who HAS overridden this using the Preferences because of performance issues should re-investigate this since the new out-of-the-box default for changing the color of the Work Part versus the Displayed Part if MUCH more efficient in NX 6 than it has been in the past with older versions of NX.
