NX8 locked attributes. How to unlock?

We currently have a material attribute in our older version parts. NX8 has a locked material attribute and we have changed the name to supposedly unlock it but can't get the attribute unlocked. Any body have sucess?

Attributes which are set by an NX applications, such as Material property data, cannot be deleted or modified interactively. The reason for this is that downstream applications, such a FEM/FEA Simulation modules, are depending on the values of these attributes being accurate and consistent. If you wish to change a material, you do so by editing the assigned material using the...

Tools -> Material -> Assign Materials...

...function.

I understand that which is why we changed the name in the customer defaults. Any new ones are unlocked but how do we unlock EXISTING attributes?
