Just read the Charlie Mariano obit.

I don't know his music. The writing of the obit sure caught my eye, however. The reporter (quite young, I'd wager) got a bit carried away with the big words, trying to sound like William Faulkner with a new thesaurus. I'm not even sure all those words were used correctly. What did he mean by, for example, "the Duke Ellington rhapsodist Hodges"? (Rhetorical question.)

Ah, but what do I know? I'm just a bitter 50-something left-brain engineer who was raised by a former English teach. [banghead] I like simple declarative sentences.

Dave - obits are like that . . . Johnny Hodges was a pretty damn good saxophonist (or saxist) with the Ellington orchestra. You are correct, sometimes when I read those kind of words, it makes me seem a bit gormless!!!

Oops - and the writer is English - need we say more . . .??

I didn't know Whey Long but I used to hear Mariano a bit. His full and real name is very typically Italian: Carmine Ugo Mariano.

He was a formidable alto saxophonist, very often into explorative forms of jazz.

There isn't much on youtube, here it's in a very mainstream mood with guitar playing 'stella'
