Dear eng-tips members

I wonder the vertical type single segmental countercurrent HX (1 pass perpendicular baffle cut) (see attachment) should be arranged in odd cross passes or even cross passes.

Obviously, the horizontal type single segmental countercurrent HX (1 pass perpendicular baffle cut) is better to be arranged in odd cross passes so that the cooling medium will be flow down the shell nozzle outlet.

But, why is still some of our senior colleague insisting that vertical type single segmental countercurrent HX (1 pass perpendicular cut baffle) must be arranged in even baffle no (or odd cross passes if it is perpendicular cut) ? Do I miss something? And, I assume that parallel baffle cut can be arranged in the odd or even crosspasss.
Please real pro here can help me out.

Thank you for your help.

When the shell nozzles are vertical and the baffle cuts are perpendicular (horizontal cut) then there needs to be an even number of baffles. This keeps the flow pattern in both ends of the shell in better cross flow for higher heat transfer.
