I look after the maintenance of a HVAC system for an office block. We have a neighbouring business (meat processor) that a certain times of the day lets out an awful odour. Our HVAC system sucks in the the odour and stinks out the building. It is that bad that some people have almost hurled at the smell of it. The local govt havent done anything to stop the odour being emitted in the first place.

Does anyone know of any products such as filters available on the market to knock out odours in the incoming air supply?

Check with your filter distributor for activated carbon (charcoal) filters. You may want to check with your neighbor to try to identify the source. Most likely it is an organic-based source, which activated carbon filters work well on. However, non-organic sources may not be filtered out and will pass right through.

Since this would be a long-term expense that won't go away (the smell returns when the filters become saturated and need replacement), it may be cheaper to work with your neighbor and see if the odor source is being exhausted too close to ground level. If so, it may be cheaper to install a tall exhaust duct that would carry the odor above any intakes you may have on your building. Offer a 50/50 split on the expenses.
