Off the Wall - Hot Tub Cover Repair

Ok, ok. So I know this isnt the most proper place to ask this, but why not ask a bunch of Civils?!?!

So I have a hot tub cover that is torn (about half way) along the center crease(sp?) in the middle of the cover. There are also other tears and cuts in it, most very minor.

Has anyone tried to repair a cover before? I was thinking of just stapling a tarp to the top of it.

Whats the opinion/suggestions of this educated group?!?

You might be able to repair as you suggest, however I had a cover that needed replacement and the steel reinforcement inside the cover had rusted so badly that it was not worth trying to repair. The combination of heat, humidity and chemicals is very corrosive.

I don't know about you, but the idea of a cheap and ragged looking tarp covering my $8,000 hot tub seems the wrong place to save $300, and this is just the appearance aspect.

If it was just "one out-of-character", I'd ask a dealer about a repair kit (a patch-and-glue type). Otherwise, I'd assume other aspects of the cover are getting old also, such as the seams, the metal reinforcement, etc. Plus, if the cover is loose, it won't "keep the heat in".

I suggest an internet search for "replacement hot tub covers".

My cover didn't have the metal reinforcement other poeple must have. I wanted to use that "As Seen on TV" stuff to fix leather and vinyl for some tears. You might try glueing a thicker pad (vinyl or something from Walmart's clearance section) inside the cover to the existing material to provide the hinge and use the tv stuff for looks. The tv stuff worked well for an old car seat I had. I have no idea anymore what it is called, but it comes in different colors and should be at Walmart. If you have a vinyl cover use the "Armor-all" rejuvanating cream first as this really helps flexibility.

I just moved so I completely understand saving $300. I seem to drop that at Home Depot about every week.
