Dear Specialist;

In offsite facilities (wellhead and manifolds) we very often use A694 Gr X60 or X65 ...etc. flanges.
I looked through standards but I found that this material is not endorsed by ASME B16.5 and B16.34.
I found this material only in MSS SP-44 which covers class up to 900 only.
Can someone explain how these flanges are used for Gas Injection (CL2500) and Water Injection (CL1500) since no code gives pressure-temperature rating for these classes.

Many thanks

Flanges of these materials are covered by API 6A and so the flanges your using could be API Class 5000 or 10000 flanges.

Rneil;
Many thanks
But let me confirm to you that the flanges we are using in wellhead facilities are ASME B16.5 or MSS SP44 A694 Grade F60 class 1500(for water inhection) and 2500 (for gas injection). I'm 100% sure that there is no indication of API 6A in the flange descriptions. So my question is still without an answer.
Sometimes, we specify for the mating flange between piping system and christmass tree that it shall be API 6A class 5000 (or cl10000)material=A694 F60 , but for other flanges (not the mating one with Xmass tree) we specify clearily cl1500 or 2500.

Thanx

I've never seen this situation before so can't advise you on that one. You could contact the flange manufacturer and ask them how they can be quoting the flanges to a standard that does not cover those materials and pressure classes and let them explain?

Thank you Unclesyd and Rneil;

Rneill, you said in your previous answer that A694 flanges are covered by API 6A. I looked through this standard and I didn't find. Could you please give more indications where did you see this material (except in MSS SP 44).

I attached herein a sample of material class where you can clearily see the description given for pipeline flanges, gas injection for instance. ASME 16.5 code and class 2500 are clearily mentionned. I can send you ten (10) differents specification for several projects where same description is given in client material specifications. I can't imagine that clients such as BP, Shell are wrong.

Many thanks

Unlike ASME B16.5 and B16.34, API 6A does not provide lists of specific grades of materials that are "listed". Instead, it provides mechanical properties that materials must meet and it does not list specific grades of materials. Refer to Section 5.4 of API 6A. Provided the ASTM A694 material meets the requirements of API 6A (as specified in Section 5.4) it is permissible for use for API 6A components as shown in Table 4 of API 6A.

With regards to the use of A694 in an ASME Class 1500 or 2500 piping system, I did not say that this was wrong: I said that I had never seen this situation before and could not advise you on it. All I can say is that while these flanges may be manufactured to ASME B16.5 dimensions, they can not be certified as ASME B16.5 flanges since the material is not a listed material. Consequently, these are unlisted components and you would need to consult B31.3 with regards to the rules pertaining to the use of such unlisted components.

This question should have been posted at ASME / API code issues or other.

MSS SP 44 lists ASTM A694 material specification. However the pressure rating allowed is the same as that for ASME B16.5 ASTM A105. The same should apply for the higher ratings not listed in the MSS SP. A694 is paired with API 5L X grade materials for matching the hub thickness to pipe wall. For the material being unlisted in ASME B16.5, there should be qualifications done previously. You should be able to find other related posts on other forums which may lead you to it.
