Oil pick up design

I have to modify oil pick up for a BMW engine as I am changing from a rear sump to a front sump set up. The oil pickup as a strainer which is shrouded arrangement with a small entry hole for oil. See pic.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to this design compared to an open strainer like the other pic.

I can see it probably create a small reservoir of oil but it could be a sludge trap.

I am planning to fit a boxed in baffle with hinged flaps.

Your design is more likely to suck in air than the original design. The original seems designed to supress a suction vortex and to get closer to the bottom of the pan.
 
Agree with CompositePro. The top design is intended to act as a slosh baffle, and pull oil from as low as possible in the pan.
You're correct in worrying about sludge; however, a decent service schedule will control that problem in most engines.
I'm curious as to why you'd use flaps for a box baffle? As opposed to multiple small entry holes at the base of the walls. It just seems like an uneccesary complication to me. If it were my engine, I'd stick with the original pickup and just modify that as needed. But a box baffle would also be fine, depending on design.
 
It is pretty common practice to use flaps as "check valves" to keep oil near the pickup.

And depending of the volume the top design could also create turbulence and restriction. The bottom design
would be fine as long as the oil level and sump quantity is high.
