I have an engineer designing a new gearbox. Typically when we design a gearbox we are fitting into an existing system. this time we are designing a new gearbox for a new system. How do we specify the correct oil pressure for the central lube system?

RPM from 460 to 1600 on input at 6,000 kW, helical gear design with Spherical roller bearings. Oil Spray not Splash lube, will probably be using 460 grade oil. Application is heavy industrial.

The helical gears will put a thrust load on the spherical roller bearing so the oil should enter on the thrust side. Too much pressure and the oil will mist too little and it won’t get in between the rollers.

With that kind of RPM and power, lubrication may need to be CFD modeled to make sure it gets to the right places.
