We constructed a u stamp heat exchanger using asme viii 2010 design code. Our production use an old material from year 2006 for tubesheet.
does code accept using old material

Got paper on it? If so, should be OK, if it also meets current mateial specification.

Maybe prudent to check these things out before building.

Mike

our production just use the material without qc acknowledgement. that is the problem.
to me if the chemical composition and mechanical strength meet the current spec. it should be ok.

the problem is matching all the criteria between asme ii and astm 480 is tricky. later on i will upload the millcert here.

abangbikerz, you are welcome to do so, I doubt I'll examine it.

Mike

abangbikerz, what criteria is so difficult/tricky to match? The ASTM A-480 is identical with ASME SA-480. As far as the composition concerns, you do yourself the hard mile or hire a metallurgist to identify the steel. Then compare the allowables for that material in ASME II of 2006 and 2010. Also, try to meet the people in fabrication and talk to them, you might find other surprises regarding the gap between design, QA and fabrication.

Dear abangbikerz,

If you have material certificates, from the top of my head, there is no problem. I think ASME VIII doesn't have any rule for material age. Anyway, just to be sure, I would check if the specification of A-480 has changed from 2006 to 2010.

I advice you to check ASME II because most of the time it states that SA XXX is similar to ASTM S XXX. If it is not similar usually it is stated what is different (no hardness test, no HE). So you can do yourself the extra requirements and turn ASTM material in to an ASME.

If you don't have papers of the material I think the only chance is to certify the material. You will need to prove the chemical composition, hardness,...For more details check UG-15.

If the Data Report is certified to the 2011 Addenda then all material shall meet the 2011 Addenda. The tube sheet MTR must be verified to be in compliance with the 2011 material specification or it can be recertified in accordance with UG-10 of ASME Section VIII-1.

Yes material gets old and unacceptable to use in Code wk. If from2006 it should be okay. Check VIII-1 and II-A into the first pages table U-3 too see if your material is acceptable.
When the production disobeys Q.C. then you have a bigger problem and you should not be fabricating any Code items, Genblr
