One model file for both die-casting and machining dimensions 1

Hi All!

We are designing a part that is made by die-casting and then machined to the dimensions we need.

Is there any way of having two sets of values within the same model file / feature tree? One set for die-casting and another set for machining.

Or, is there some other way to do this. We have been using two separate files for die-casting and machining but it is becoming a management nightmare.

We are currently using NX8.5 but will probably upgrade to NX9 (at least, we are pushing it). So, NX9 tips are welcome, too!

What do you mean by a management nightmare? Working with two seperate items is in my opinion the best solution if they are setup correctly of course...

Don't you use your die-cast model for your blank in machining?

Sometimes we change dimension that requires both die-casting and machine version to be changed.

Sometimes we forget to change one and it creates confusion in the future.

 
You could do all of your Die casting Steps first in the part Navigator and create a feature group of these. Then create a group of features that represents your Machine features and use these to cut away from your RM model. Do you have two different drawings an RM and a Machine? If so doing this with one part file could be challenging.
 
Wave linking or promote body commands are generally used to create an associative copy of the "as cast" part and then the machining operations are modeled on top of this copy. This way any changes to the cast part are automatically propagated to the "as machined" model. The 2 parts can have 2 separate part numbers, which is generally what you want.
