Hi All,

Does anybody know of any good online aircraft composite repair courses? All of the good courses mentioned on this forumn (ie abaris) don't offer any training in Australia.

Thanks!

The area of composite repair training is a can of worms. I have been trying for many years to suggest some need for standards is appropriate. The best course in AUS by orders of magnitude is run by the RAAF NDT and CT section at RAAF Amberley. See Link
However, access to that course is on a Defence requirement basis.

My greatest exception to currently available training can be defined by the manner in which they teach heating methods. If the course teaches the use of a single heater blanket, irrespective of the substructure, then I would be suspicious. Seriously, heat sources must be arranged to match the heat sinks, and you can never do that with one blanket. Secondly is the location of thermocouples. If they teach that the thermocouples are arranged in a set uniform pattern irrespective of the substructure, I would be very suspicious. Next is the manner that the thermocouples are used for the process. If they control by the COLDEST thermocouple, then there is a very real risk of overheat damage, and I would seriously question the validity of that training. Thermocouples perform two functions: 1. to control the hottest point under each heat source to prevent overheat damage, and 2. to provide assurance of adhesive/resin cure. To achieve this, thermocouples must be located at sufficient points under each heat source to assure that the hottest point under each heater is measured and used for control. Separate thermocouples must be located around the repair to assure that the COLDEST temperature within the bondline is measured to assure that the adhesive/resin is adequately cured. These requirements can not be met by either a single blanket arrangement or by a set uniform thermocouple arrangement.

There are similar indicators about the quality of training that can be derived from data on surface preparation (especially for metal surfaces).
A good reference is Link

IN AUS I suggest you try to get copies of DEF (AUST) 9005, and AAP 7021.016-2 (I believe RAAF has renumbered the last document and downgraded the significance of the first document. If you can't get copies contact me.

If there is any interest I have a one day course on adhesive bond damage tolerance and failure forensics aimed largely at engineers, but it does have an extensive amount on repair methods. Importantly it explains why current practice in damage tolerance and NDT may not always prevent failures in structural bonds. The learning outcomes enable graduates to identify the type and causes of failures as well as outlining corrective measures.

Don't know if that is any help Bower7.
