Lecture Abstract

Rheology by definition is the study of the deformation and flow behavior
of materials, or "the science of flow". Flow behavior, often complex, is
important in many industrial processes and can determine the success or
failure of a wide range of commercial products. Paints and industrial
coatings, molded plastics, adhesives, personal care products and cosmetics,
inks, cement, drilling muds, ceramic slips, solder pastes, foodstuffs and
medicines are examples of the range of industrial materials whose commercial
viability depends on having the “right” rheology. These materials may be
called “complex fluids”, for which the viscosity and elasticity are not
material constants but rather are complex functions of stress, strain,
and strain history. For such materials, the necessary rheological
properties must be defined with due regard to the flow or stress conditions
which prevail during processing and application. However, it is often
difficult to link fundamental properties with real-world performance.
This lecture surveys the subject of dispersion rheology, from fundamentals
to its application to the understanding of performance problems of
complex fluids, especially coatings. Detailed attention will be given to
the measurement and interpretation of the “flow curve” for fluid
dispersions.

Lecturer Biography

Dr. Richard R. Eley is a Senior Scientist for ICI Paints, responsible for
the Rheology and Interface Science Laboratory at the Strongsville Research
Center. He has over 25 years experience in materials characterization and
problem solving. He holds a Ph.D. in Physical-Inorganic Chemistry from
Kent State University. With 27 technical publications, his research interests
include the rheology of complex and structured fluids (paints, coatings,
adhesives, sealants, colloids, dispersions, polymer melts), chemorheology
of thermosetting polymers, surface energetics of polymers, wetting of liquids
on solids, and coating flows modeling and simulation. He is Adjunct Professor
in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the University of Delaware.
He has received the Mattiello Award for distinguished scientific achievement,
and three First-Place Roon Awards (best annual scientific paper) from the
Federation of Societies for Coatings Technology. He is a member of the
American Chemical Society, the Division of Polymeric Materials Science &
Engineering, the Society of Rheology, the Federation of Societies for Coatings
Technology, and serves as a member of the Editorial Review Board for the
Journal of Coatings Technology.
