I am pleased to share with you that Onshape has entered a definitive agreement to be acquired by PTC.

As I recall, the incorporation of other software into PTC's line has not always been smooth or to the users' liking.

I think many Onshape users will be exporting their data to hard drives tomorrow.

Great. PTC continues to dilute the brand to the detriment of their existing users while letting their newest items rot.

Irony - Onshape was founded by the guy who founded Solidworks. And he was a director of engineering at ComputerVision; remember them? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

That purchase is what really damaged PTC. Along with CV's CADDS software they also got the leader of the Windchill product CV was working on and made him CEO, where he siphoned PTC CAD focus into Windchill development. This undercut the CAD pretty severely and eliminated the lead PTC had on other makers, while killing off the comparatively budget IntraLink PDM product and losing small to mid sized users to Solidworks. Strategically they seemed to think they could take a PDM lead, but it turns out that databases are more easily developed by much larger companies and so a dominant position was never going to happen. Lately they tried to be an IoT company and frequently try to push IoT into the Pro/Engineer (now Creo, WTF) user space, particularly the Pro/E user conferences.

It's a complete mess and they look more like they are positioning to be sold to Dassault and killed.
