Open web joists in UK

Guys,
Are open web joists used in the UK? we have a project in Dubai and we are trying to use DLH joists for a roof framing, however, during a meeting with a local steel supplier, it seemed that they are not used to such trusses.

Can anyone give me more information regarding the use of joists and joist girders in UK?

Open web beams (joists) are common but doing a search for DLH joists it appears what you call joists I would call a lattice joists. The first link is for a fabricator called Metsec. The second two are open web beams, but I guess not what you are looking for.

Ussuri I think hit the nail on the head there. I'am confused as to whether you mean a truss or a joist (what I would call either a column or a beam).

You can call a caastellated beam a verendreel (dont think I spelt that right) truss because technically it has no cross members.

In the UK I dont know the last time I specified a castellated beam, we generally use a cellform or cellular beam. I understand from a chat with a westok representative that they cut the beams to be holes instead of hexagonal shapes because there is less material waste.

If you mean a joist - as in it has tapered edges on its flanges and the flange thins from web to tip then we dont really use "joists" at all as they are incredably weak.

Also why are you asking for UK information when the project is in Dubai? Are you going to export the beams to Dubai from the UK?

Based on a meeting with a big local fabricator, the steel sections etc are imported from outside Dubai. BS5950 is the code of choice and hence all sections have to be British sections. I am surprised that this is the case as ACI, ASCE and UBC are used extensively.
