Can anyone give some tips on what options to select or any other ideas to help open a step file.

The file is about 48,531KB and a colleague is having trouble with it. Sadly another colleague who did lots of this kind of stuff got laid off at the start of the year, or I'd be asking him.

I've attatched a bitmap of the options pop up with my best guess/recollection of appropriate settings but any help appreciated.

We'are already using a 64 bit machine with I think 16GB RAM.

Tried a search but nothing came up on the first page or two.

Thanks

KENAT,

Have you reminded yourself of faq731-376 recently, or taken a look at posting policies: What is Engineering anyway: faq1088-1484

Hi Ken,

Unfortunately I'm not here to give you a solution, just to share your misery.

I've had my share of STEP import troubles in the last couple weeks. With limited knowledge of its workings, my conclusion is Solid Edge support for this format is very flaky.

Worse, there is definitely something broken in Solid Edge ST. I can't open some STEP files in ST, even ones generated by SE itself (I just tried for kicks), it creates a new document based on the template chosen, but it's empty. I don't have this problem with V20.

Today, simple STEP files generated (I was told) by Pro|Engineer wouldn't open in ST neither in V20, but did without a hitch in (of all softwares!!!) Mechanical Desktop 2008. And they were pretty simple pieces too. In fact, MDT opens a 36MB STEP assembly pretty fast on my AMD Athlon64 x2 3GHz with only 2GB of RAM. In SE it takes forever, with uncertain results.

As for the STEP Import Options Box, what worked pretty well for me is this: uncheck "Heal and stitch", and check "Stitch surfaces" instead. Pretty complicated plastic pieces seemingly imported pretty good, though the biggest was 12MB.

BTW your full name shows in the "Output Folder". ;-)

Problem with Pro/E is: accuracy. They can set the accuracy too high
which will make SE (and others) choke on them. Also AP203 might give
better results than AP214.
Regarding empty files after conversion: this might be caused by
setting the templates folder within Options to a different place
rather than using the standart location C:\...\Solid Edge xx\templates
I've experienced this problem myself, clearing that entry everything
went OK.
