New to the group and have the following question I hope someone can help with. I keep getting the following error upon launching my I-DEAS program?

I have modified all privileges in the computer so I'm not sure why I'm getting this problem? I also changed the program start in location to the \bin folder and it worked errorless for a while and now getting this problem again. Is this a Windows or I-DEAS problem.

Thanks for your help,
Scott

Not sure why the problem went away and then returned unless you've installed new modules that has reset permissions on the install directory.

It's not good practice to allow the software to place its' temp and scratch files within the install directories, it may be worth creating a few folders within the Team directory and directing the temp and scratch files to there.

Personally I have, within Team, a "Startup" folder where the menu command for ideasogl is directed to Startup so that all temp files are placed in there. Then I have a "Model_File" and "MF_Scratch" folder that Model files and scratch files are placed in as directed through the data management settings under options.

That way no permissions have to be modified for the install binaries and the housekeeping is a whole lot easier - I-DEAS can be very messy with its' temporary files.

Thanks for your comments, no additional modules were installed so I'm not sure why it happened. It may be due to the wireless network and my dynamic IP address, it seems to effect my hostid.

Anyway I agree with your suggestion of where the programs stores the temp and scratch files. How do you go about redirecting this location?
1. To redirect the program, as I correct in doing the following:
start\programs\ideas10 (right click, properties, start inlocation defined)
2. If the above is correct, do I just copy the .cmd files to the desired start in folder?

Do I need to set any other preferences to save files as you mentioned, like options/ data management, etc. once in the model file.

Thanks again for your help.

To set up the Startup directory you do just as you say, but there's no need to copy any files into here. This just becomes the default write directory so that, apart from Model Files and Scratch files, anything I-DEAS creates will default to this area.

For Model and Scratch Files, as you say, Otions, Preferences, Data Management and then set the User File to where you want the Model Files and the Scratch File to where you want the Scratch Files. Then quit out and start the session again and the new directories will now be propogated with the correct files.

Interesting comment about the Wireless Network. If you're networking I-DEAS across a wireless Network then I can see problems arising. If this is the case then ensure your Startup, Model File and Scratch File folders are on you local machine.

If your I-DEAS installation is standalone, however, then this shouldn't really cause any problems.

Thanks for your file house keeping advice, I have created the necessary Team folders. In further cleaning up any remaining files, can you please advise which ones I don't need?

For example,
.sf1
.aux
.stat
.opt
.opr
.dsp
.psf
.app

As long as you don't have an I-DEAS session running all those files can be removed. The only one I'm a little unsure of is the .stat file as I don't recognise this one.

Thanks once again for your tips on which files I can remove.
