Hi Everyone:

Is there a standard temperature operating range that is followed for the following two bolt specs?

SA 193-B8 Class 1
SA 320-B8

I know that 193 is typical high temp, and 320 is low temp, but what is the lowest that can be used for either bolt? Does it depend on charpy results?

Thanks!

Jason

jgibbs22;
Let me re-phase your question with a reply; What is the permitted service temperature range for the above alloys?

Reply; Using ASME B&PV Code, Section II, Part D, Table 3, the permitted service temperature range;

SA 193 B8 Class 1 -20 deg F to 1500 deg F (Section VIII, Div 1 pressure vessels)

SA 320 B8 -20 deg F to 400 deg F (Section III vessels)

SA 193 Grade B8 Cl 1 for other pressure vessels is 800 deg F.

SA 320 B8 for other vessels is permitted to 100 deg F.

The lowest temperature for either specification above is based on code of construction impact (Charpy V Notch) requirements for use - Section VIII, Div 1 this material is exempt to -320 deg F.

Thank you for the response and info!! One more question off your response....

ASME Section VIII, Division 2, Tble 3.5 lists an MDMT for SA-193 B8 Cl 1 without impact testing of -425. For SA-320 B8 Cl 1, it is based on testing temperature during testing...

Side question: If Div 1 says -320 without impact and div 2 says -425, does that mean you can only use the Div 1 value when dealing with a Div 1 vessel? What about flanges used on piping?

Side question answer - yes, you are bound to the requirements of the specific code of construction (c of c). In other words, if the C of C was ASME Section VIII, Div 2, you are bound to those requirements. You cannot cherry pick or mix 'n' match.

Forgot to answer your second question;
for flanges used on piping, the appropiate piping code (ASME B31.x) would need to be followed for permitted service temperature ranges.
