We are using 14" Triple Duty Valves on our condenser water system. There are three pumps and generally we use one with run times rotated to even wear. I noticed during commissioning that there was an excessive pressure drop across the triple duty valve when it was all the way open. The actual drop was 15 psi!

We finally got around to tearing the valve down, and it is pretty obvious from wear marks that the piston was cocking in the guide and restricting flow. I'm not sure how to avoid this problem in the future. The pumps have a Y-delta starter and they tend to slam the valves when they start. Has anyone had similar problems with these valves and do you have a suggestions to rectify the problem? I am considering putting a soft starter or VFD on the pump drive but I'm not completely convinced this will completely solve the problem.
