I am a graduate student (Structures) at University of Cincinnati and currently starting with my thesis work. I haven't really come up with a concrete idea but is planning to work on "Optimization of steel structures considering semi-rigidity of Connections" . Could anybody please tell me the most latest structural software for the same. Is ETABS a suitable one?
If i plan to include Genetic Algorithm. How shall i go about it?

RAM Structural System (from Bentley Systems Inc.) offers an easy way to assign partially restrained types of connections to the lateral beams. You can investigate the effect on drift, member end moments etc. and then check the design of the members for code allowables.

A genetic algorithm?

I see that term come up a lot with master's and PhD students. Am I the only one who shakes his head and laughs at how much time and energy is wasted on these "genetic algorithms"? And, has anyone seen any real world structural engineering applications where one of these algorithms was useful.

I've seen some architectural examples (everything ends up becoming custom formed arched and castellated beams), but those are merely an architects fantasy where the structural cost is neglected. I
