Which output parameters are to be checked (and adjusted if required) in PV Elite design, of Horizontal TEMA Type Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers for optimum location of Two saddles on Shell portion.
Are there any thumb rules for location of the saddles.

DK44, good rule of thumb: Locate saddles at quarter points. Reality: Locate saddles so that they miss everything else if possible.

Perform Zick calculations in PVE or other software to insure the various stresses in the shell are acceptable. Caution, classic Zick theory is very limited when applied to S&T exchangers.

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

If you use a computer no rule of thumb is applied, use trials and play.
Remember: For units with removable tube bundles, supports should be designed to withstand a pulling
force equal to 1-1/2 times the weight of the tube bundle.
See TEMA 9TH EDITION.
