Posted this in the SW forum and I'm not getting the response I had hoped for, thought I'd try here:

I am using OptisWorks ray trace software (OWLM1) within SolidWorks and it has been an excellent tool. Is anyone else out there using this software? I would like to be able to model a GRIN material lens without upgrading my software. Approximating the performance with curved surfaces has been working OK but I need an accurate model. Is anyone aware of a model that can be downloaded?

Have you tried speaking to OptisWorks directly for tips on how to make a GRIN model without buying their upgrade? I noticed in another posting you said that a coworker has Zemax. I have Zemax and it has the ability to model GRIN media. I have never used it so I do not know how functional it may be. My designs involve illumination systems with consistent (at least in theory) optical properties. Hope this helps a little.

Yes, I have contacted OptisWorks. The GRIN material is not supported in my software. I can import Zemax files but in the case of the GRIN material the imported model will change to the default OW material. OW is dandy software for my needs but like everything else there are limits. Perhaps '07 will be time to step up.
