We have a waste water tank where we want to detect the surface interface between the water, on the bottom of the tank volume, and the Organic Layer, on the top of the water.

We know the organics, but do not know what percentage of each is there.

Currently, we have a radar gauge, but it's only reading the top surface.

My first thought is a float that will 'sit' between the layers. We know the specific gravity of water, so we should be able to do that. However, if we already have non contact radar, it'd be nice for something non-contacting.

My second thought is to insert a water detector in the side of the vessel. We really aren't concerned about the actual level of the interface. Our concern is that it does not drop below our outlet that goes to our oxidizer. Is there such a device?

Is it possible that radar can read this interface? Ultrasonic? Any recommendations for sensing the interface?

What is the "organic" ? Can you give some specifications
for ranges, accuracies etc.?

organics will be:

Methanol
Formaldahyde
Phenol
Glycols: Ethylen Glycol, Propylene Glycol mainly
Possibly some acids

Methanol will be in the water... possibly up to 30% at times.

Allmost all of these has unlimited solubility in H2O-
except phenol may be limited ( if I remember correctly)

If you want to measure dissolved organics, itis a completly different task.
