Organizing Design Engineering Project Files

I was wondering what section names people use to organize their design engineering files? This could be in physical binders or in computer folders.

in Section D is what I'm looking for.

I'm just trying to improve my binder organization and thought I'd see what structure other people use.

We define our file requirements with leading digits 10, 20, 30, etc followed by the description of the folder contents - 10 RFI, 20 RFQ, etc so that additional relevant folder structure can be added in neccessary - 10 RFI, 11 RFI - Interior Panels, 12 RFI - Castings

I have been struggling with this for years. Trucks suggestion of numbers does work great, for the reason he stated, and becasue as engineers we love numbers.

I almost create a new system for each project, with the thoguht that I will go back and review the projects to create that master system...I am still waiting to start it.

Hi Group,

I kind of have to do the same thing for an ERP implementation that the company is going through right now. I have to take all this data that's here & there & compile it in some type of "clean" or "transitional" format that the ERP system can accept, which is a massive Excel file. Once that's done, then the ERP system will take our massive Excel file & upload.

However, I'm arguing with another PM that it's not a simple copy & past from one (Excel or Word Doc) application to the ERP Excel template we've been given.

Some have suggested making a number system because of the ERP Field Characterization restriction which is only 8 characters. I think this now adds another huge element of confusion & work because we would then have to establish this number system to categorize our different groups of data & then have to have some huge index to reference or remember our areas.

Any suggestions in relation to the original posted topic almost appears that it could also help me too.
