Orifice meter runs

Does anyone know of any issues regarding using an orifice on a 1" pipe run for gas measurement? They want to weld on some 1" flanges on the 1" pipe and place an orifice between.

Please let me know your thoughts.

Flanges usually aren't a problem since they have a line-size opening (or larger). Just make sure you have the proper runs of straight pipe both upstream and downstream as specified by the orifice plate manufacturer.

There are commercial orifice flange unions, predrilled and tapped for the standard 1 inch upstream/downstream taps for impulse tubing.

Usually come with a jackscrew, too.

API 14.3 (AGA 3) says that their calculations and standard dimensions cannot be used below 2-inch. Daniels and others sell a 1/2-inch and 1-inch unit, but they don't claim that these units satisfy API 14.3 (you have to read their material really closely to catch that). Bottom line is that for custody transfer a 1-inch meter will violate the contract that says "build in accordance with API 14.3/AGA 3". For engineering data it is probably fine as long as the accountants don't get involved and start using the numbers for something regarding a regulation or a contract.
