Gentlemen,

Failing after reviewing several IEEE guides, NEC Safety code (Part 4) and Google searches, I am posting the under mentioned question to our members.

In an OUTDOOR HV switch yard (say 69, 115, 135 kV etc.) how much minimum clear space do we have to provide between the foot prints of any two equipment? (I have observed that all utility design guides give clearances between phases and phase to ground, but not this information)

Can any member kindly help me out to find out a suitable reference guide or code etc?

Thanks in advance!

Kiribanda

Clearance between two pieces of equipment is not a safety issue, so it is not covered in the codes. The clearance is based on the ability to maintain the equipment and remove it if necessary. The RUS Substation Design Guide, available at gives guidelines but no spacings.
