Over Bend Deflection on Stainless Steel

Hello,

I am looking for an Over Bend Deflection formula for Stainless (.094 thick).

Like if I have a 35deg. bend needed, would I make the bend at 37 deg. such that the deflection it comes back would be 35 deg.

Any info or experience on a good starting point to start with would be great.

The thing is I need to manufacture a punch out of D2 56-58 Rc for form this bend for a customer and then put it into their machine with minimum down time … so I really need to get it right the first time.

Get a piece of the exact alloy that your customer uses, cut some test pieces, and bend it yourself. I don't know of an accurate way to predict it to the precision that you need.

Get the same temper, finish, and manufacturer if you can.

The size of the component will also be a factor so producing a scaled down sample tool and piece is not really that good an idea.

Can you get any information from the material supplier? Failing that 1-2 degrees over top limit is probably a reasonable place to start, you should at least minimise the amount of rework required.

Also use the press you will use in production if possible.

I really do not have the Luxury to test before making the Punch/Die. Getting it close for starters and then reworking sounds like the best solution in this case. I was hoping someone on this forum might have had some experience on working with this type of work before and has seen a characteristic in about what it would take to make a very close bend without testing.

You might get a decent guess if you'd reveal the alloy and temper of the workpiece, and the bend radius you're trying to attain.
