Is it typical for processors to be over clocked?....I'm looking at purchasing a new system
and reviewing processors.... trying to get a handle on rated speeds, over clocking and such.

thanks

People have been overclocking for a long time, and it has become more typical with the introduction of the Intel K type (unlocked) CPU's, but I wouldn't say it is typical yet.

The Intel K types are very simple to overclock and are very stable with the stock coolers up to about 4.4GHz. Above that and they will probably require more efficient coolers, or even 'water' cooling at the extreme clock speeds.

Thanks, CBL.... and thanks for the tip the other day referring to that thread by Charles Culp on configuring
a workstation to run SW.... good info there.
