I am involved in the analysis and design of a suspension systemfor a heavy duty vehicle (oilfield). For the purposes of preliminary design I am hopeful of obtaining a rough road spectrum. Possibly, something Federal (public domain). I thought that the Army or the DOT might publish something but so far I've had no luck finding anything.

What can you advise? Perhaps someone has done something similar.

You could possibly back out something from MIL-STD-810F Method 514.

There is also a test facility I ran across about 3 yrs ago; look for Transportation Research Center in Ohio. They had some good descriptions of their test courses:

The Munson, Churchill, etc. courses as described in some mil specs, I was unable to find 3 yrs ago, but the TRC stuff appeared to be good enuff at the time.

The best information I've ever seen on this was actually published by the US Forestry Department.

I found >70 SAE papers using "road profile" as the search term.

IRStuff is right in pointing you towards MIL-STD-810F. The method he indicated has just about every conceivable vehicle covered over just about every conceivable terrain. Reading the spec is quite involved so find a quiet room somewhere!
