Overhead conductor naming convention

As opposed to not naming at all or using a numbering or letter code as with any other conductors.
 
I don't have any feelings about it one way or the other-it is what it is. I was just asking if anyone knew the history behind the practice.
 
We are sensitive people who like to be in touch with our inner child.

It's a great shorthand method for identifying a very specific conductor type with one word. And the class of conductor by the type of name. Birds are ACSR, flowers are AAC, etc.
