In the distant past, I read and recall using a fifty percent reduction for overhead welding.
Is this reduction used today? And if so where can I find it written? Thank you in advance.

No. Qualified overhead welding is the same as any other position weld, provided the welder is qualified for the position and deposits a proper weld profile without disqualifying defects.

Now, I might need a 50% increase in the TIME required to do an overhead weld .....

Never mind the pain and burns ... 8<)

Add also the time to get scaffolding, your fire watch, the equipment, etc into position. If you can avoid the overhead weld, do it.

AWS D1.1 lowers the maximum single pass fillet welds for overhead position as opposed to flat or horizontal. Welder also needs to be qualified to weld overhead position.
