Hy,

I am just trying to figure out what happens to the metal grain structure of A/SA516 - Grade 60 material when it is temporary heated to 500°C for lets say 5h and then cooled to ambient temperature during operation of a pressure vessel. Will the material be subjet to embrittlement or creep?

This is e.g. the case if you see hot spots on refractory lined PV when the refractory is damaged. Couldn't find much in the literature about such cases.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Regards,
Dan

At 500 deg C temperature exposure for SA 516 Gr 60 you are in the time dependent regime for service. This means creep deformation can occur depending on membrane stress and secondary stresses. Embrittlement is not an issue at this temperature. If the refractory is damaged, I would locally remove it and repair it. In the process, you can inspect the SA 516 Gr 60 base material along with thickness readings.

You need to define the stress levels at temp. Otherwise see metengr.
