Can anyone recommend a free or low-cost source which describes details of the ASME code for pressure vessel design? I would prefer something available on the internet.

I don't currently work in this field, but I still consider myself a student, and would like to learn more. Since the actual code itself is extremely pricey, it is apparantly only meant for people who already know what they are doing, and not those who might want to learn about it.

The Casti guidebook to ASME Section 8 might be a good start. Don't know if you can find a copy to look at, typically you should be able to find it on half.com at a reasonable price.

simchuck,

I have a book that is a very good reference. It is titled
"Pressure Vessel Handbook" eleventh edition by: Eugine F. Megyesy Published by: Pressure Vessel Publishing, Inc.
P.o. Box 35365 Tulsa, OK 74153

I think there is a more current edition out now.

I found the best introduction to section I of the ASME code ( boilers) is "Power Boilers" by Martin Bernstein and Lloyd Yoder, 1998 , ASME ,NY,NY.

There are efforts specifically for the same purposes to refresh or help engineers to appreciate the salient points of pressure vessel design as per ASME Code Sec VIII Div 1. Some good correspond course through email issues are now available. you may visit the and view the details under distance learning on process equipments and Pressure Vessel technology by Charisma Global Networks, Auckland, NZ.
