Is there a "rule of thumb" or guideline to preliminarily, determine OWSJ (Open Web Steel Joist) girder or joist width?

I always need to contact the joist vendor, who will then contact a potential engineer, who will then give, understandably, only an approximation.

I thought I stumbled upon a guideline within an OWSJ Load Tables guide, but, I have yet to "re"-discover it.

Any thoughts?

Thank you!

I'm pretty sure canam's joist catalogue has some info on depth and construction of joist girders.
