Packed Bed L/D to avoid channeling :

I am after a rough guide / or basic validation to avoid Channeling in packed beds .. for activited carbon treating a product to remove order.

You should be asking the activated carbon pellet supplier for this critical info, since only they will have the pellet hydraulics data relevant to column design. Chanelling can also occur in well designed columns due to mechanical disintegration of the pellets, which in turn, may be caused by one or more of several deviations in feed fluid composition / poor operations / some defect in the column.
