Paint type test

Bought a house. Out back is a wooden deck which has been painted. To re-paint I will wash and then roll on a paint which matches the type originally put down assuming it is an appropriate type for outdoor decks. So, which type of paint is suitable for wooden (standard 2x4s) outdoor decks. Further how can I test to determine which type of paint is currently on the deck?
