Dear All,

Does anyone have experience with the application of a coating system on
Titanium?

Thanks in advance for reply.

Regards,

Henk

The term coating has a wide meaning. I think you mean a polymer-based coating (aka paint). If so, then titanium fasteners for the aerospace industry use a phenolic based coating with aluminium flake pigment for corrosion compatibility with aluminium aircraft structures. The coatings are standardized in NAS 4006 and EN 4473, and the process is standardized in EN 4474.

Like CoryPad noted, you need to specify exactly what you mean by a "coating system on titanium". Since titanium has excellent corrosion resistance it rarely has a surface finish applied just for corrosion protection. Sometimes it might have an anodize finish or a dry film lube coating applied for improved wear properties.

You will need to use some type of etching primer when painting titanium.

What material was the black coating used on the SR-71 Blackboard?

Black 9color) obviously, but to enhance thermal emissivity? Radar absorption as well? Visual (no glint nor shine) or a combination of "all of the above"?

A mach 3 blackboard, wow!

The coating didn't have any radar absorption properties, afaik, but "Finished aircraft were painted a dark blue, almost black, to increase the emission of internal heat and to act as camouflage against the night sky. The dark color led to the aircraft's call sign "Blackbird"." - quote from Wikipedia.

He doth write with quick, black strokes across the deep blue skies! 8<)
